Course Content

The structure is a summary of the full 5 days but conducted over one full day as follows

Session 1: Work Health and Safety Framework

  • Overview of the WHS framework and key terminology, including duty holders and their responsibilities
  • The role and functions of WorkSafe Queensland
  • Penalties and consequences for non-compliance under the WHS Act

Session 2: Consultation, Representation and Participation

  • Consultation obligations as set out in WHS legislation

  • Formation of workgroups and the election process for HSRs

  • Duties and responsibilities of HSRs and Health and Safety Committees

  • How inspectors contribute to and support the consultation process

Session 3: Role of the HSR, Issue Resolution and Support

  • The role of HSRs in consultation, supporting workgroups, and participating in a Health and Safety Committee (HSC)

  • Conducting investigations into workplace complaints

  • Strategies for issue resolution and available support for HSRs

Session 4: Risk Management, Monitoring and Notifiable Incidents

  • Fundamental principles and requirements of risk management

  • Monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of risk controls

  • Reporting and managing notifiable incidents

Session 5: Provisional Improvement Notices and ceasing unsafe work

  • Purpose and key functions of Provisional Improvement Notices (PINs)

  • HSR responsibilities and the process for issuing a PIN

  • Managing disputes and strategies for resolution

  • Rights and procedures for stopping unsafe work

Entry Requirements/What to Bring:

Participants must provide a USI number on enrolment, provide photographic identification on enrolment. 

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Bring three Evidence of Identity (EOI) documents on the morning of Day 1. Click here to view acceptable document types.
  • Have numeracy, literacy and communication skills at a minimum Year 10 level
  • Be able to read and write in English

Provide proof of completing one of the following:

  • A WorkSafe Queensland–approved five-day initial HSR training course (as required under the Work Health and Safety Act 2011), completed within 12 months of election, or
  • A WorkSafe Queensland–approved one-day HSR refresher course, completed every 12 months and within 28 days of re-election.

Pre-requisites: Health and Safety Representative (HSR) training course.

Delivery Mode: Face to face delivery only.

Duration: 1 day

Assessment

Assessment is a combination of written questions/answers and practical demonstrations.

On Completion: Participants will receive a WorkSafe Queensland Health and Safety Representative Refresher Training Statement of Attendance from Intuitive Training (RTO 31685).
