The Electrical Safety Office (ESO) technical guides were developed to assist electrical contractors and workers comply with their electrical safety duties.

The ESO compliance and enforcement data indicates a level of non-compliance or understanding of the importance of these critical areas leading to enforcement action by the ESO and/or referral for a disciplinary proceeding.

The guides are technical reference material intended for the electrical industry.

Readers will gain an understanding of the legislative requirements when working on or near energised electrical equipment, importance of correct electrical installation testing, appropriate selection of personal protective equipment (PPE), how to identify electrical installation with alternate supplies and correct isolation and lockout procedures.

This Code of practice has been developed by SafeWork NSW and has been approved under section 274 of the NSW Work Health and Safety Act 2011. 

This Code of practice commenced on 22 May 2026.

It replaces the 2006 Work near overhead power lines Code of practice.

Wayne and Graeme did an outstanding job with the Switchboard, EWP and Live Pole Rescue training. What I really liked was that they didn’t just run through the course material and send us on our way. They took the time to explain why things are done a certain way and made sure everyone actually understood what they were doing before moving on. Both of them brought a lot of real-world knowledge and experience into the training, which made a massive difference. The practical side was excellent and they were always happy to answer questions or go back over something if anyone wasn’t sure. The training was professional but also relaxed enough that you felt comfortable asking questions and getting involved. I came away from the courses with a much better understanding and confidence in what I had been taught. A big thanks to Wayne and Graeme for the effort they put in.
