Course Overview: This nationally recognised course is designed to provide the skills and knowledge required to safely operate a boom-type Elevating Work Platform (EWP) where the length of the boom is 11 metres or more in accordance with all relevant legislative requirements.

What is a Boom-type elevating work platform? A boom type EWP is a telescoping device, hinged device, or articulated device, or any combination of these, used to support a platform on which personnel, equipment and materials may be elevated.

A person performing this work is required to hold a boom-type elevating work platform HRWL.

Competence in this unit, does not in itself result in a Risk Work Licence (HRWL) to operate this plant.

Target Audience: Construction, electrical and general workers who are required to gain a HRWL for an EWP over 11m.

Entry Requirements/What to Bring:

Physical Fitness: Participants will be required to complete physical activities to inspect, operate and pack up an EWP

Participants must have adequate physical fitness to:

  • Access an EWP basket.
  • Bend and kneel to conduct pre-start checks.
  • Lift and carry worksite equipment and EWP dunnage.

Oral communication: This course contains safety critical information requiring participants have the ability to read and understand english and basic calculations.

  • Participants must be able to communicate in the english language and actively participate in verbal communication.

Writing: Participants must be able to complete simple written forms or records to provide information and complete basic forms.

Numeracy: Participants must be able to understand basic math and formulas to calculate weights.

Digital Skills: Participants must be able to use a portable handheld device, laptop or PC to access and navigate the internet and complete basic forms.

Participants must supply:

  • Photographic identification
  • Hi Vis clothing, protective footwear (steel capped boots)
  • USI Number

Learning Outcomes

    At the completion of this unit of competency, you should be able to demonstrate the ability to:   

    • Advise relevant person/s on site of  hazards and risk elimination/control strategies
    • Apply safe operating procedures for an Elevating Work Platform (EWP) including all functions within the safe working rated capacity
    • Apply emergency procedures
    • Apply traffic management plan procedures relevant to their role in the work area
    • Inspect EWP’s prior to use
    • Conduct pre start and operational checks on EWP
    • Understand and apply isolation procedures, where appropriate
    • Identify safe approach distances (SAD) appropriate to EWP operations
    • Check compliance plate and load chart for reach requirements and load suitability
    • Clarify workplan and checking understanding
    • Comply with Commonwealth, State and/or Territory work health and safety (WHS)/occupational health and safety (OHS)/occupational safety and health (OSH) legislation and regulations
    • Control and operating a boom type elevating work platform ensuring movements and control functions are safe, smooth and comply with operating requirements
    • Inspect and use relevant safety equipment
    • Interpret and confirm relevant documentation, workplace instructions, safety information and emergency procedures for the work task and relevant area
    • Interpret workplace procedures in relation to various work environmental conditions
    • Assess of site and EWP set up procedures
    • Understand and apply stabilisiing procedures for an EWP 
    • Enter & exit work platform correctly Inspect and use relevant safety equipment
    • Interpret and confirm relevant documentation, workplace instructions, safety information and emergency procedures for the work task and relevant area
    • Interpret workplace procedures in relation to various work environmental conditions
    • Maintaining communication with other workplace personnel using appropriate workplace procedures including procedures to ensure all movements are conveyed clearly and succinctly
    • Record and maintain accurate information relating to EWP operations
    • Report to relevant person/s on site risk control measures that are not in place or deficient
    • Shutting down a boom type EWP in accordance with manufacturer requirements and workplace procedures
    • Use and interpret EWP manufacturer requirements and data, including compliance plate and load chart, to enable correct EWP selection for task 
    • Reporting requirements.

      Assessment

      Assessment is a combination of written questions/answers and practical demonstrations.

      On Completion: Participants will be issued with a nationally accredited Statement of Attainment for TLILIC0005 License to operate a boom-type elevating work platform (boom length 11m or more)
