Course Overview:

The EWPA Yellow Card Training Program is designed for people needing to develop the skills and knowledge required to operate Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPs or commonly known as EWPs).  Designed by the EWPA as a best practice training package,  the course provides training in the safe use of various types of EWPs including boom type EWPs with boom length under 11 metres.

Participants attending Intuitive Training may complete a single or multiple modules, depending on the type of EWP they will be operating. Modules include:  

• Vertical Lift    (VL)
• Scissor Lift   (SL)

This training is mapped to RIIHAN301E Operate elevating work platform

Target Audience: Operators of Elevating Working Platforms including Telecommunications workers, Electrical Contractors required to operate an EWP to perform building, construction, maintenace works.

Age Limit: Participants enrolling in this course must be a minimum of 16years of age to attend EWPA Yellow card Training.

Physical Fitness: Participants will be required to complete physical activities to inspect, operate and pack up an EWP under 11m

Participants must have adequate physical fitness to:

• Access an EWP basket.
• Bend and kneel to conduct pre-start checks.

If you feel it would be difficult for you to participate or perform basic tasks, please contact our administration office prior to training.

Oral communication: Operators of MEWP’s are required to have a thorough understanding of the risks associated with using them.

• Participants must be able to communicate in the english language and actively participate in verbal communication.

Reading & Writing: Participants must be able to read and understand technical information written in english, complete simple written forms or records to provide information and complete basic forms including:

• Instructions for emergency lowering systems,
• Wind speed ratings,
• Variable rated capacity restrictions
• Operator’s manuals containing critical safety information
• Logbook checklists 

Numeracy: Participants must be able to understand basic math and formulas to calculate weights.

Digital Skills: Participants must be able to use a portable handheld device, laptop or PC to access and navigate the internet and complete basic forms.

Participants must supply:

• Photographic identification.
• Hi Vis clothing (workwear), protective footwear (steel capped boots), Safety hard hat.
• Broad brimmed hat, sunscreen & water bottle are recommended.

Learning Outcomes

This course provides students with the ability to operate an elevating work platform that safely, effectively and efficiently following legislative requirements and workplace procedures to carry out work activities including:

• Locating and applying required documentation, policies and procedures
• Selecting and wearing personal protective equipment required for work activities
• Monitoring and managing equipment performance using indicators and alarms
• Using a range of communication techniques and equipment essential to the safe completion of work instructions
• Meeting written and verbal reporting requirements and procedures associated with operating an elevating work platform

Understanding of key policies, procedures and relevant standards for operating an elevating work platform including:

• National Standard for high risk work
• Safe work practices
• Operating manuals for elevating work platform
• Site personnel and operational safety requirements
• Elevating work platform operational procedures
• Hazard, incident and emergency identification and implementation of control measures, including the risk of overhead crushes, and distance from power lines
• Disposal of hazardous materials

EWP selection and site setup information, including:

• Suitability of ground conditions, terrain and structure surfaces
• Environmental requirements and constraints related to elevating work platforms
• Types of elevating work platforms, their characteristics, technical capabilities and limitations

Assessment is a combination of written questions/answers and practical demonstrations

On Completion: Upon successful completion, participants will be issued with a nationally accredited Statement of Attainment for RIIHAN301E Operate elevating work platform
