Course Overview: This ESI worker renewal course is designed for participants to mainatin the necessary skills and knowledge to work safely near ‘live’ electrical lines and equipment while constructing or perfoming maintinence works on communication cables attached to electricity supply industry structures

Target Audience: Existing workers in the ESI industry including safety observers / spotters, construction and maintenance workers required to work safely up to the defined safe approach distance near energised electrical apparatus (including electrical powerlines) as non electrical workers.

Entry Requirements/What to Bring:

Physical Fitness: 

Participants will be required to complete involved in role play activities and will be required to:

  1. Perform 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR on an adult mannequin placed on the floor and 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR infant mannequin placed on a firm surface.
  2. Perform a rescue from  live LV panel
  3. Perform pole top rescue.
  4. Perform EWP rescue and escape from an EWP.
  5. Provide first aid and treat injuries specific to te ESI industry (electrical shock, electrical burns, bites or stings, shock, bleeding)

Participants must have adequate physical fitness to:

  • Lift, move and carry a rescue manikin up to 50kg in weight and position into the recovery position.
  • Bend and move between standing and kneeling positions safely to assess causality’s condition.
  • Perform at least 2 minutes (5 cycles) of uninterrupted CPR on an adult mannequin placed on the floor.
  • Perform at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted single rescuer CPR on an infant resuscitation manikin placed on a firm surface.
  • Access a low voltage panel, operate an isolation switch, break a casualties contact using an insulated crook.
  • Access and climb an extension ladder to a height of up to 3.5m.
  • Climb steps to access a truck mounted EWP and platform basket, attach a controlled decent device (CDD) and climb out of the EWP basket to repel to the ground.
  • Access and operate emergency controls or retrieval devices and operate a range of retrival devices to rescue a casualty.

Oral communication: This course contains safety critical information requiring participants have the ability to read and understand English and basic calculations. Participants must be able to communicate in the English language and actively participate in verbal communication.

Writing: Participants must be able to complete simple written forms or records to provide information and complete basic forms.

Numeracy: Participants must be able to understand basic math and formulas to calculate heights and weights.

Digital Skills: Participants must be able to use a portable handheld device (tablet), laptop or PC to access and navigate the internet and complete basic forms.

Participants must supply:

  • Proof of holding pre-requsite unit.
  • Photographic identification.
  • Hi Vis clothing, protective footwear (steel capped boots)..
  • USI Number.

Face to Face Learning

Duration: 1 day

Participants complete theory and practical training and assessment in a suitable environment at our premises or in their workplace.

Blended Learning

Blended learning is available for selected units within this course:

  • HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation
  • UETDRMP010 Provide first aid in an ESI environment
  • UETDRMP016 Perform elevated work platform rescue
  • UETDRMP018 Perform rescue from a live low voltage panel

Participants may elect to complete online learning  prior to attending face to face practical training and assessment in a suitable environment at our premises or in their workplace.

Learning Outcomes

Learning Outcomes

    At the completion of this unit of competency, you should be able to demonstrate:

    • Identify statutory acts and regulations and hazards associated with working or operating vehicles/plant, equipment and hand held tools near overhead power lines.
    • Identify ESI hardware and voltages used in the ESI environment.
    • Identify relevant clearances/ No Go Zones for various voltages found in the ESI environment.
    • Identify correct selection and understanding of clearance tables relevant to works being performed onsite.
    • Identify correct emergency procedures associated with working or operating vehicles/plant, equipment and hand held tools near overhead power lines.
    • Demonstrate CPR and apply a defibrillator, and perform a low voltage rescue.
    • Perform pole top rescue procedures to meet network owner requirements.
    • Perform a rescue of personnel from an EWP in the event of an accident or equipment failure.
    • Escape form an EWP in the event of an accident or equipment failure (Optional).
    • Provide first aid procedures relevant to treat injuries consistent with electricity supply industry procedures.

    Assessment

    Assessment is a combination of written questions/answers and practical demonstrations.

    On Completion: Participants will be issued with a nationally accredited Statement of Attainment for up to six (6) units of competency listed above.
