Course Currency Status: (Release 1) Current

Course Overview: This is a nationally recognised course designed to equip workers with the skills and knowledge required to safely work at heights. The course provides valuable knowledge regarding the safety practices applied when working at heights

Target Audience: This course applys to new and existing workers in the building and construction, mining and resources, maintenance, electricity and telecommunications industries, government entities, warehousing and agriculture sectors who need to:

• Control the risks associated with people and objects falling from heights.
• Maintain current industry authorsiations for working at heights.

Physical Fitness: Participants will be required to complete involved in role play activities and will be required to fit harness’s, erect and climb ladders and heights structures during practical training.

Participants must have adequate physical fitness to:

• Lift, move and carry ladders and heights safety equipment.
• Position ladders, hauling lines and equipment weighing up to 20kg.
• Access and climb ladders & tower structures.
• Access an angled roof structure up to 6m high using suitable PPE and safety systems.
• Bend and move between standing and kneeling positions safely.

Oral communication:This course contains safety critical information requiring participants have the ability to read, write and understand english and basic calculations. Participants must be able to communicate in the english language and actively participate in verbal communication.

Writing: Participants must be able to complete simple written forms or records to provide information and complete basic forms.

Numeracy: Participants must be able to understand basic timing and CPR cycle counting.

Digital Skills: Participants must be able to use a portable handheld device, laptop or PC to access and navigate the internet and complete basic forms.

Participants must supply:

• Photographic identification
• Comfortable clothing (allow for bending, kneeling, sitting and standing) closed in footwear.
• USI Number

Learning Outcomes

Participants in this course will learn the workplace and regulatory requirements for working safely at heights under applicable Commonwealth, state or territory work health and safety (WHS) legislation, Australian Standards and codes of practice

This includes understanding and ability to complete:

• hazard identification and risk control
• job safety and environmental analyses (JSEAs)
• safe work method statements (SWMSs)
• safety data sheets (SDSs)
• environmental and worksite safety plans
• reporting problems
• processes for planning to work safely at heights:
• assessment of weather and ground conditions that may affect safety while working at heights
• assessment of conditions and hazards
• determination of work requirements
• identification of equipment defects
• inspection of worksites

Interpretation of

• safety manuals and instructions for plant, tools and equipment:
• operation manuals
• manufacturer specifications
• safety signage and load charts for plant
• signage and barricades

Selection, fitment and use of personal protective equipment (PPE) used when working at heights.

Methods for identifying common faults with scaffold or work platform systems

Types, characteristics, uses and limitations of equipment used when working safely at heights

Assessment is a combination of written questions/answers and practical demonstrations

On Completion: Upon successful completion, participants will be issued with a nationally accredited Statement of Attainment for RIIWHS204E Work Safely at heights
